A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
